13 Reasons Christ Church DID NOT Start on the Day of Pentecost

SOURCE: The Church of Christ denomination often state that Christ Church started at Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost. But is this really true.

1. The church is referred to before Pentecost, both by the word “church” (Matthew 16:18; 18:17) and by its figurative names – flock, bride, house, etc. (Luke 12:32, cf. I Pet. 5:2; John 3:29, cf. Ephesians 5:22-31; Mark 13:33-36, cf. I Timothy 3:15).

2. The English word “church” is a translation of the Greek word “ekklesia”, which means a called-out assembly. Jesus’ disciples were both called-out and assembling with Him before the day of Pentecost (e.g. Matthew 4:19; John 1:35ff).

3. Apostles were set in the church (I Corinthians 12:28) before Pentecost (Matthew 10:1-2; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:13). The gospel was preached by them before Pentecost (e.g. Luke 9:6).

4. Ordinances were instituted and observed before Pentecost (John 4:1-2; Matthew 26:26-30).

5. John the Baptist prepared a people ready for the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 1:17), not for the day of Pentecost. Mark 1:1ff. indicates the gospel age began with John’s ministry. Cf. also Matthew 11:13 and Luke 16:16.

6. The church was commissioned before Pentecost: first the limited commission of Matthew 10:1-4 and then the extended commission of Matthew 28:18-20.

7. Jesus sang in the church before Pentecost (Hebrews 2:12; Matthew 26:30).

8. The last days refer to the church age, and the last days were in existence during Jesus’ ministry (Hebrews 1:2).

9. There was church discipline before the day of Pentecost (Matthew 18:17).

10. The church had a business meeting before Pentecost (Acts 1:15-26).

11. The Lord added to the church on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41-47), so there had to exist a church for people to have been added to it.

12. There was an ordination service before Pentecost (Mk. 3:13-14).

13. The church had a treasurer . John 12:4-6

There is no reason to suppose that the church could not exist with her visible Head present. Nothing in scripture says the church was or had to be started on Pentecost.

About Damon Whitsell

Hello, my name is Damon. I have been studying Christian Cults since 1985 and doing Cult Apologetics online since 1998 because I grew up with Mormons, Oneness Pentecostals and Bible Missionaries in my family. All three of these groups (or Cults) think they are the One True Church and the Only True Christians and to be Saved you must join their Church. So as a result I started studying the Bible for myself to try to determine which of these groups had the truth. After much praying, reading and studying I decided the Mormon, Oneness Pentecostal and Bible Missionarie churches are not real Christian Churches at all, rather they are Christian Cults because they do not line up with what the bible really teaches about Salvation and they are not in agreement with other Essential Christian Doctrines. I found that according to what the Word of God teaches, and Historic/Orthodox Christian Teaching, Salvation cannot be earned by any form of human works or efforts I found that Salvation is ALL by the Grace and Work of God and that Salvation and Eternal Life are a Free Gift from God (Ephesians 2:8, Romans 6:23, John 3:16) to all who will Trust in Jesus Christ and the atoning sacrifice He made for us by dying on the Cross for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). The Word of God is clear and plainly says “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Because I know what it is like to be targeted by Cult Groups and to suffer from the spirtual confusion and frustration brought on by their false teachings, I have endeavored to help others find True Eternal Life in Jesus Christ and to break free from the clutches of, and to be healed from the damage done by, Cult Groups who claim to be the One True Church. So it is my hope and prayer that the Lord will use my Websites to help those that need help and that some who use my websites will be helped by them to find the Free Gift of God’s Salvation, that is only found in His only begotten son Jesus Christ.

  1. The posting above is full of error and shallow. When examined for content, it lacks substance.

#1. The Mt. 16:18 speaks of the church YET to be built. Bride at Jn.3:29 is later recognized as a church reference, but this is the only figurative reference BEFORE Pentecost, and this reference like all others given above do NOT show the Church to be existent BEFORE Acts 2.

#2. The meaning of church/ekklesia is determined by the context-how the word is used. The word can mean “assembly” OR it can mean the NT church. Jesus never referred to His disciples as the “church” prior to Acts 2.

#3. Apostles were SET in the church – 1 Cor.12:28. Mt.10/Lk.6/Mk.3 show where Jesus SELECTED the twelve. So what? (Filler: The 12 preached the Gospel before Acts 2 – so what?)

#4. What point is the author trying to make? Filler…

#5. John prepared the people for Christ – he did not prepare a church! And ??? (Filler: The Gospel began at Mark 1:1. What is the point ?)

#6. HOW was the CHURCH “commissioned” ?? This is getting goofy! The disciples were given a limited commission at Mt.10 – Ok. At Mt.28:18ff the disciples were given a world-wide commission AND also told to WAIT in Jerusalem – see Luke 24:49, Acts 1:5,8. On Pentecost/Acts 2 – that (HS) which they were waiting for came !!

#7. More filler… this is false!

#8. Hebrews 1:2 doesn’t say what the author claims. False again.

#9. A matter for a “congregation” of Jewish brethren (see verse 17 for the clue), and later to be applied in Christ’s church – Christian brethren.

#10. The word “church” is not used in Acts 1:15-26. This point is desperate – and somewhat disingenuous.

#11. Acts 2:41-17… It is here the church began. Verse 41 says that “…there were added…”, but the word “church” does not appear until verse 47. This is because those 3,000 people that “gladly received” the Apostle’s words that day, and who were baptized for remission of sins, were not merely added to the church… those 3,000 BECAME the church !

#12. More desperation. This remark makes no sense.

#13. LOL ! The disciples had a treasurer. The US Govt has a treasurer also, but that does not make them a church.

The posting above is just more “hot air”, that talks about that which they do not know!
